“Some students don’t get out of the city and see a sky like that.” said Arthur French, German teacher about the star-filled night at the Sadie Hawkin’s dance. “It’s actual dancing, not just standing in a barn,” said senior Cathrine Ruddy about the Sweethearts’ dance.
Sadie’s in organized by the National Honors Society (NHS), while Sweethearts is organized by Student Council. Sweethearts cost about 8,500 dollars, 7,000 goes to the venue and 1,000 to the DJ, plus catering costs. Sadie’s cost 2-3,000; 1,000 for the band, and 300 per bus, for about 15 buses. But the net profit, said French, goes towards other organizations by NHS such as the talent show, presents for the TAPPP mothers, and donating food or grants to the community we live in.
For Sweethearts, they charge a small percent more than what they need to they can pay the “volunteers, for gardening and cleaning the outside of the school.” said senior Eva Gibey-Jones.
So what do you get when you go to each dance? “There used to be a photo booth at Sweethearts.” said Gibey-Jones. Gibey-Jones went on to say that “all there is to do is dance.”
For Sadie’s, you get a ride to the ranch, square dancing, music, hay rides, and a “light atmosphere.” said French. At Sweethearts, there is plenty of music, beverages, and lots of space for dancing.
Some students have some strong opinions for these dances. Senior Emily Mann said “there isn’t a lot of pressure at Sadies.” However, Ruddy feels the “prices are too high” for Sadies while Mann says “it’s a good price.”
French says Sadie’s can be a safer environment for students because they don’t have to worry about how they will get to the ranch, or how they’ll get back to South. French also said NHS tries to price their organizations at a fair price so everyone can go.
