Everyone has opinions and some South students are getting an opportunity to share those opinions. On February 14 a few opinionated tigers headed downtown to the Minneapolis Youth Convention.
This event was hosted by the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board (YCB). On their website, www.ycb.org, YCB says they promote, “the health, safety, education and overall development of Minneapolis youth.” Freshman Kowsar Abdi attended this event along with three other South students. She describes what she is doing as, “a group of youth who get together to help their city and work with congress.”
Student Council Advisor Nicole Schneider explains that the convention is made up of 55 teams of students. “They meet to resolve issues on housing, education, safety, employment, health and transportation,” says Schneider. “My group is doing education,” says Abdi, “we’re going to talk to the superintendent about how to get better resources.”
Sophomore Haley Richter heard about this event through student council. Even though she is not attending the event, it is something that she is interested in. “I think it’s a great opportunity to discus social issues and have your opinions be heard,” says Richter. She adds that she thinks that, “this event will be a good gathering of students who care about our society.”
The Minneapolis Youth Convention will be an exciting day with many young minds at work. “I hope to get my opinion out and actually make change,” shares Abdi. We wish the four South students attending this event luck in making changes.
