“We do them to keep kids honest,” said Hall Monitor Paul Lundin about hallway sweeps, “otherwise people would take advantage.” Although the hall moniters do them for the good of the school, students don’t seem to agree.

“They are cracking down too much,” said sophomore Haley Richter “I don’t like it, not one bit.” Richter as well as other students believe that the monitors are too strict.

“If you don’t remind them by doing a hall sweep, they will just keep being late,” said Lundin. Although this may be the case according to Lundin, some students don’t mind being caught. “The star room is fun, it’s like a study hall.” said junior Carnell Sheppard.

This leaves people to think, is this system effective? “In some ways, yes, you get your schol work done, but for me it’s a way to get out of class.” said Sheppard.

As for other students, “I don’t think it’s effective because I miss the rest of my classes so I don’t learn,” said junior Jessie Ellison, “all I want is to learn.”

While some students think hallway sweeps are ineffective, others believe they’re unecessary. “I don’t like them because they sometimes stop you in the hall when you’re not doing anything wrong.” said Richter.

“The worst thing is kids thinking we’re against them, not on their side, or not helping, when we’re actually trying to help them.” said Lundin. “We are trying to help them.

“If you’re a girl and you walk with a purpose, you don’t get checked for a pass.” said sophomore Mary Thomas. Lundin says, if a student looks like he or she is on the way to class or is “walking with purpose,” the student won’t be stopped, but gender is not a factor in the least.

“There is also a contuinity of who you seem to find in the hall,” said Lundin “sometimes kids forget this is a school.” There are rules students need to follow, and it’s a requirement to be to class on time, according to the rule book.
