On March 12th, 2013 students from South’s Silver Ribbon Campaign (SRC) demonstrated at the Capitol. They rallied about mental health illness laws being passed in the legislator.
Many of the students who rallied at the capitol found it to be a fun and educational experience. They do a field trip like this every year. Junior Leah Crawford, an SRC leader, said that she was “ very impressed with South students,” who came and rallied. Many people were impressed with how South was so passionate about mental health awareness and South went to talk to Senator Torres Ray to help expand SRC into other Minneapolis schools.
Rookie Leader Zabiba Sameru said she felt “Powerful at the rally and that mental health shouldn’t be pushed to the side.” Junior Hannah Arvold, a member of SRC said “that the rally was inspiring and a really cool experience.” The trip to Capitol brought mental health illness to the stand and it showed adults that students do really care about mental health. This field trip showed what South is really about and it displayed a different side of South to the public.
The senators and public who were at the rally “loved it” said Sameru. “We need younger voiced to bring out mental awareness . . . the public liked how students had an opinion and cared about mental health illness and awareness.”
