Last weekend an elite squad of three south chess players took Supernationals by storm finishing the all three players finishing in the top 80 of over 500 contestants in their division. Freshman Nick Jensen finished 13th, freshmen Chris Mann finished 35th and junior Michael Diaz finished in the top 80.
In the Supernationals tournament teams come small and South’s was especially stunted. Teams normally have at least 5 people. More competitors would have improved the team’s national ranking.
“If we had brought one more person we probably could have gotten top ten in the nation for the division we were in,” Diaz stated. Diaz said it was only an average year for south chess, “it’s as good as we’ve done in the past”
The team of Jensen, Mann, and Diaz stayed in the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Centerin Nashville, TN, the biggest hotel in the United States. It is complete with “two jungles and a river” claims Diaz which are actually the garden conservatory and the river delta respectively.
With considerable success at another national tournament the south chess team looks forward to next year where they hope to do even better.
