As the senior mother’s in South High’s TAPP (Teenage Pregnancy and Parenting Program) prepared for graduation and the road ahead, their children did the same. On May 23rd, 2013, TAPP hosted a graduation for the babies of graduating seniors.
For the sixth year in a row, the ceremony serves as “A separation from the daycare, because they won’t be coming back next year because their moms are seniors,” according to coordinator Kristin Johnson-Nixon.
This year five babies donned a cap and gown as their mothers did on June 1st. Attending the ceremony was Minneapolis school board member Tracince Assbury. Along with South, Roosevelt High School holds a similar program for babies of graduating seniors.
As for what’s coming next: “We always hope they are going on to preschool or Head Start if they are toddlers,” commented Johnson-Nixon.
