Lily Mooney and her month of Christmas sweaters
Many students at South wear holiday inspired sweaters on the last day of school in December before winter break. But senior Lily Mooney makes it special. She wears a Christmas themed sweater everyday of December: her sweaters are always fun and cheerful, they bring smiles to many students faces.
“I started wearing them in 8th grade,” Mooney remembered. “I only owned three and every year since then I’ve started getting more sweaters, vests, shirts and earrings all that kind of stuff.” She has a collection of around 25 collected sweaters and 5 vests. Mooney gets her festive attire from thrift stores, her favorite Good Will and as presents.
Mooney goes all out for the holidays, which is where she got the idea to wear Christmas sweaters: “I get really excited about the holidays. I think it’s just because I really like making cookies and decorating.”
Though she does not care nearly as much for the actual holiday: “The excitement leading up to it like I usually have parties with friends and decorate a lot. I just get really excited,” said Mooney. Her exciting weeks before Christmas consist of decorating her mini tree as well as her family’s big tree and making sweets.
Students at South don’t just wear Christmas sweaters. Hanukkah and other holiday sweaters have been spotted, although Christmas fashion has become so popular over the years with ugly Christmas sweaters, vests, shirts, pants and jewelry it has become the most worn of all the holiday themed clothing.
Mooney and senior Jane Oas met of the freshman open trip to the Dominican Republic, and have been friends ever since. Oas really likes Mooney’s idea of wearing sweaters everyday in December: “I think it’s really fun and it’s something that not many people do. It’s pretty unique,” said Oas.
For the last day of school before break many people ask Mooney if they can borrow one of her sweaters. Oas is one of many: “last year I borrowed one from her for the last day of school before break and I might do it this year too.”
