Do you have a favorite place to spend time at South?
Either the media center, where it’s quiet, or the dance studio. It was a good opportunity for me to join [Dance Company] because then I can do that in school and also outside of school, like more opportunities to perform and just show what I can do. [Erin Brown]’s very open with students so she’ll tell you what’s true. She won’t hide anything. She’s a very good dancer and also actress ‘cause she teaches theater too. She’s very caring as a person and yeah, she’s nice. I started dancing when I was in preschool. I saw my mom dancing and I just decided that I wanted to become a dancer too. I did that for ten years and then I took some time off, and then when I came back I was in eighth grade. I noticed that there was dance here so I decided to join here and now I’m also doing dance also outside of school too. I train with this company called Ananya Dance Theater and they do Indian contemporary styles. I can do whatever I want, whatever I’m feeling I can express that in my movement. I also like the feeling of being on stage. Some people think that I’m a shy person but when I get on stage I’m not as shy. At South, we have like a different dance form for different units. Last quarter we were doing jazz. Now I think we’re gonna do modern. Before I came here, I took ballet, tap and jazz and I’m still doing Indian too.
Do you feel like you’ve changed during your time at South?
I think so, yeah. I guess South has changed me because I’ve just been more aware of our society and how.. like Black Lives Matter, all of that, people of color being discriminated against. I already knew that before, but I’ve been more aware of it especially in high school. I like how the Open team is aware of that and we can talk about that in classes, I mean I’m not sure if other programs do that too, but we talk about that.
