A Pepfest was thrown by Student Council in the South High gymnasium on Thursday, October 11, to honor athletes involved in fall sports. It was also used as a time to encourage and support the South High football game the day before a big match on October 12. This matchup against Edison was the first ever night game played at Barnard Field.
The activities of the pepfest began with individual recognition of each varsity fall sports team. Each team stood and, upon being recognized, recapped some quick highlights of their seasons. Captains from the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams were featured and gave brief speeches on their upcoming sections games. Finally, one could feel the excitement in the air as captains from the football team spoke about their big game.
Probably the most exciting part of the afternoon was when all captains from all of the varsity sports teams were called down to the gymnasium floor to compete in a dance competition.
Unlike other pepfests the school has seen, this was not specifically tied to a particular game or to Homecoming. For that reason, turn out was not like that of other pepfests that student council has hosted. There was a great population of athletes, though, and many appreciated the effort and recognition.
