South High has a long list of fascinating and successful alumni. Recently, this list has expanded to include newly drafted WNBA player Tayler Hill.
A 2009 South graduate, Hill was the number four overall pick in the first round of the 2013 WNBA draft on April 15. After a remarkably successful four-year career at Ohio State, the 5-foot-10 guard will be playing for the Washington State Mystics next season.
“You don’t have very many good ones come along that often that have a chance to be great,” Washington Mystics general manager and coach Mike Thibault told the Washington Post. “I think Tayler Hill has a chance to be a star.”
Ohio State is not the only place Hill has found remarkable success.
“She was a game changer, a program changer,” said South Athletic Director Mark Sanders. “She put South High on the map for girls’ basketball.”
Hill began her South basketball career as a seventh grader, and by the next year, the eighth grader was playing at the varsity level. In the next five years, Hill led South to a 139-14 record, taking the team to the state championship game in 2007 and 2008 and ultimately winning the title in 2009.
According to Sanders, Hill is the first girl in the history of South High to have made it to the WNBA. This accomplishment is not undeserved.
“[She was] one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen,” he praised. “She was always the first in the weight room and the last to leave.”
